How Pong Made Atari an Arcade Powerhouse
A simple exercise, a packed tavern coin box, and two bouncing paddles gave Atari its first defining hit.

“The machine is broken.”
That message brought engineer Allan Alcorn back to Andy Capp’s Tavern in Sunnyvale, California, only days or weeks after Atari installed its prototype game. He opened the rough wooden cabinet and found that its electronics still worked. The failure was a makeshift milk-carton coin catcher jammed with quarters. Customers had played so often that the machine could no longer accept their money.
For the young Atari, this was more than a funny repair call. The company had no established factory, famous brand, or deep catalog. Its new game had begun as a practice assignment for one recently hired engineer. The overflowing quarters offered something much more valuable than an executive forecast: proof that strangers understood the game, enjoyed it, and paid to play again.
The prototype was Pong. Its two paddles and square ball helped turn Atari from a tiny startup into the first successful video game company.
Atari needed a hit after Computer Space
Nolan Bushnell and Ted Dabney entered coin-operated entertainment through Computer Space, the first commercial arcade video game. Nutting Associates released it in 1971. The sculpted cabinet attracted attention, but its spaceship controls and physics were difficult for many bar customers to understand after dropping in a coin.
The experience still proved that an electronic game could be manufactured and placed beside pinball and other amusement machines. Bushnell and Dabney used what they had learned to establish Atari in 1972. The company needed a game that operators could sell, players could grasp quickly, and a small team could actually build.
Allan Alcorn became Atari’s first engineer and, after the two founders, its third employee. He had studied electrical engineering at the University of California, Berkeley, and worked at Ampex, a major audio-and-video technology company. He understood television electronics but had never designed a commercial game.
A training exercise became too entertaining to discard
Bushnell assigned Alcorn a simple electronic table-tennis project so he could practice Atari’s design process. Alcorn later recalled that Bushnell presented it as a future home product, even though it was mainly an exercise. The basic request was uncomplicated: two paddles, a ball, a score, and sound.
Alcorn spent roughly three months developing the hardware. There was no microprocessor running game software. Around 70 integrated circuits produced the moving shapes, detected collisions, counted points, and generated a television signal. For the prototype display, Alcorn bought an inexpensive 12-inch black-and-white television and mounted it inside a square wood-grain cabinet.
The number of chips disappointed him because it was far too expensive for the home product he thought he was designing. Bushnell saw a different possibility. A coin-operated cabinet could support a higher hardware cost, especially if players kept feeding it quarters. What looked like a failed consumer design could become an arcade machine.
Alcorn hid skill inside an instantly readable game
The goal could be explained in one sentence: avoid missing the ball. A knob moved each paddle vertically. The square ball bounced between players and off the top and bottom edges of the screen. Miss it, and the other player scored. No spaceflight knowledge, written strategy, or complicated control panel stood between a newcomer and the first rally.
That simplicity did not mean the design was empty. Alcorn divided each paddle into sections that returned the ball at different angles. A center hit sent it back more directly, while an edge hit produced a sharper path. Players could aim rather than merely block. He also made the ball accelerate during longer rallies, raising the pressure until someone made a mistake.
The paddle could not reach the extreme top and bottom of the display because of a hardware limitation. Alcorn kept the gap because a skilled shot could pass through it, preventing rallies from lasting forever. A restriction became part of the game’s balance.
Sound came from another practical shortcut. Bushnell asked for cheering and Dabney suggested boos, but Alcorn did not have room for elaborate audio hardware. He probed the existing timing circuit for audible frequencies and connected a few plain tones to the game’s events. Those spare blips gave contact, walls, and scoring distinct feedback. The name Pong sounded like the machine itself.
Andy Capp’s Tavern supplied the market research
Atari placed the prototype at Andy Capp’s, a bar where Bushnell already knew owner Bill Gaddis. The cabinet stood among familiar coin-operated amusements. Customers received almost no instruction, yet they could learn by watching two other people. A match was short, public, and naturally invited a rematch.
The packed coin container showed more than popularity. It demonstrated that the game could earn money quickly in an ordinary location. Bar and arcade operators judged equipment by how reliably it turned floor space into revenue. A machine that filled with quarters answered the most important part of that calculation.
The test also separated Pong from a laboratory demonstration or private prototype. People who had no connection to Atari chose to spend their own money on it. The players were not being polite to an inventor. They wanted another game.
Atari became a manufacturer while orders arrived
Bushnell decided Atari should manufacture Pong rather than simply hand the design to an established amusement company. That decision required the tiny team to learn several businesses at once. Atari had to buy televisions and logic chips, order wooden cabinets, assemble circuit boards, test finished machines, work with distributors, and repair failures in the field.
Alcorn later remembered the early production operation as improvised. Atari hired and trained new workers while its processes were still being invented. Strong demand helped the cash cycle: operators wanted machines quickly, and sales revenue could be put back into components for the next batch.
According to the Computer History Museum, Atari had sold more than 8,000 Pong units by 1974. Copies and variations from rival manufacturers spread even more widely. Atari had not patented the finished game, and the clear concept was easy to imitate. The clones reduced Atari’s share, but they also confirmed that electronic games were becoming a real amusement category.
There was also an older claim behind the paddles. Ralph Baer’s team had already developed television tennis for the Brown Box and Magnavox Odyssey. Magnavox later sued Atari over its television-game patents, and Atari settled. Pong was therefore not the first electronic tennis game. Its achievement was turning a familiar idea into the first widely successful arcade video game.
One cabinet paid for a growing game company
The earnings from Pong allowed Atari to hire more engineers, expand production, and develop a catalog instead of depending on one experiment. The company released paddle-game variations and moved into new designs such as Gran Trak 10, Tank, and Breakout. It learned that arcade success required a steady flow of fresh machines because competitors could copy a popular idea quickly.
Atari also carried Pong into the home. A Sears agreement put Home Pong into a major retail network for the 1975 Christmas season, introducing the Atari name to families far beyond bars and arcades. The home product mattered, but the arcade cabinet created the organization, revenue, and confidence that made the later expansion possible.
Computer Space proved that a commercial video game cabinet could exist. Pong proved that one could become a repeatable business. Its screen was nearly empty, but every part served the player: clear controls, changing angles, rising speed, useful sound, quick scoring, and an opponent standing close enough to challenge again.
